POLS 1100-U.S. National Government and Politics

POLS 1100 Fulfills my American Institutions credit.
I am sharing my persuasive essay on renewable energy, more specifically solar power.
I also am sharing my Quantitative Literacy Reflection

Persuasive Essay:
I wrote an essay on Solar Power as a renewable resource of energy for the United States. I outlined the logistics of it, and the news of it becoming affordable and accessible to the common man.

I am glad I took POLS 1100 when I did, I took SW 2650 (Social Welfare Policy) in the spring 2011 semester, these two classes gave me a better understanding of the political systems in the U.S. Government. Understanding how things work in Washington D.C. and understanding the history behind the Constitution really reaffirms my own political beliefs, and makes me feel more susceptible to understanding politics and how the government influence me. Learning about the logistical side of political campaigns really makes you think about how the entire process of campaigns works. I can see that money and interest groups often are what are making the political decisions, not the voice of the people.

I chose to submit this paper because it is the strongest work I made within this class. I used the outline to follow content development, claims, credible evidence, analysis, and controlling of syntax and mechanics. I did my best to explain how Solar Power works, and why it is a better alternative. I explained why this is a transition that will take time to achieve. I found lots of great resources online through research, articles, annual reports, and evidence. I addressed solutions to why people would be opposed to solar power but how it could work and be affordable. I think I covered the ground for someone to learn about the subject, and present a position on Solar Power while adhering to the guidelines given.

Quantitative Literacy Reflection-

Why is it important for American citizens to have these basic skills: calculating mean and median; calculating percentages; understanding data as presented in tables and charts. Think about the issues that citizens need to understand and the way these issues are discussed in the media and by politicians. Discuss your own experiences as a citizen who uses basic quantitative skills to understand political discourse.

American citizens need to have skills of understanding mean and median, calculating percentages, data, statistics and information so they understand the information they get on politics. The flaws of statistics can make you believe things inaccurately by just ignorance. When you understand what information is being displayed you can recognize the bias put into it. Or you can understand what specific issue is being displayed and what is left out.

In my own experience, it would be important to understand if something is the mean or the median when given information. If you don’t know whether you are discussing the mean or the median or given the information you don’t actually have accurate information. I have began to recognize why quantitative skills are so important for knowing the difference between averages, means, median, and statistics. We can be misled by the overload of information and statistics we are given if we do not know what the statistic truly means or is based off of.
